Twitter, a new bird, a new experience

20 Sep

Twitter is an online free micro-blogging service created by US citizens Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams which has been adding followers to its ranks by the thousands since it was first created in 2006, having finally reached 100 million users last year. The concept is simple and based on one simple question: “What are you doing now?” The point is to answer in 140 characters or less, and the response, called a “tweet,” can include links to other articles, pictures, and videos. Here is a video showing how twitter works.

The presence of politicians around the world is ever increasing making the micro-blogging site a powerful channel that may change the way politicians do politics. US President Barack Obama is the main reason most politicians even have a Twitter account in the first place. Before being elected, he demonstrated to his counterparts that the service is a great and dynamic way to inform of his policies and get others involved. He currently has staffers tweeting for him on his personal account, along with a constant stream of news flowing from the White House version.

There are many new functions on using Twitter,

  • TwitterMap: Users can use Twitter’s Username to do geographic search and display the user’s Twitter message, as well as the public location and other related information.
  • TwitterBar: TwitterBar is a FireFox plug-in based, you can browse the website address of the user’s current collection to their own Twitter account, other users add you as a friend if it seems you can see your current visit relevant information and so on.
  • Twitter tools: Twitter tools is a wordpress plug-ins which produced by a blog of Alex King, users can send their own wp platform, as well as to show his Twitter message, etc.; if you are the ultimate fan of Twitter, but also a wp the user, then this plug-in is definitely worth for you to collection and use.
  • Twitter Badges: Twitter Badges are provided by an official gadgets, users can express their feelings through blog.

Twitter is great at what it does: dissipating information quickly across it’s large user base. I gave it a try in 2007 and found it difficult to understand and couldn’t find value in most of the status updates. It was only this year I tried it again (for this class) and spent the time seeking out people to follow that I found relevant, that I started to find it useful for mostly staying updated and for interacting with brands.

      Great experiences, Matt.
Twitter has become much more popular in the last a few years. I started to use Twitter last year for interaction with other classmates. It definitely brings new experiences into my life.

the more i use Twitter the more im starting to like it and i can see why its so popular with people on the move. Im currently using it to follow news and find myself drawn to it because its concise and gives me just the facts. From Twitters point of view i guess they need to work out how they turn this popularity into profit… i presume they will follow Facebook and Googles approach of using sponsored links.

      Good point, Howedan.
At the beginning, Twitter is just like a note board for people to share interesting information. Now, it creates and provides much more services. Maybe Twitter will be another Walled Garden which is like Facebook and Google.

I started to use twitter since I started to do this unit (INB346- Enterprise 2.0) I didnt see any point/benefit of twitter. But now that I am using it, I believe it is really useful…Keep you update with what is going on around the world in a very simple way (only 140 words)
Even though, I find it hard to write only 140words to describe what I am doing…I believe it is good because it teach you how to express yourself in a few words….

    Nice blog…. (:

      Great point, Paola
As you mentioned, 140 characters may be the limitation or disadvantage of Twitter. However, I think we do not need to describe too much about what we are doing. Only one or twe sentences can share interesting things. According to Twitter, as of June 2010, about 65 million tweets are posted each day, equalling about 750 tweets sent each second. Consequently, it can be realized that how much people like Twitter.

You mentioned that Obama had staffers tweeting for him and I wondered whether the people following him would prefer him to write his own tweets. I like the idea of politicians having a Twitter account – I think it could help the public know more about what they do and who they are – but suspect that it could become yet another channel of highly controlled and sanitized press releases that do little more than put ‘official’ and ‘approved’ content into smaller packages. What do you think?

      Great point, Jenny.
Politicians adopt Twitter because they realize that a social networking and microblogging service can enable send and read other users’ messages quickly. At the same time, their ideas or information can be shared rapidly with others.
